ccu1The Constitutional Court of Ukraine began its activity on October 18, 1996. On May 13, 1997 the Court adopted its first decision.

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine is the sole body of constitutional jurisdiction in Ukraine.

The task of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is to guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution of Ukraine as the Fundamental Law of the State throughout the territory of Ukraine.

 

The organization, authority and arrangement of activities of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine are set forth by the Constitution of Ukraine and the Law “On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine”.

The activity of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is based on the principles of the rule of law, independence, collegiality, equality of judges' rights, openness, comprehensive examination of cases, and the soundness of the decisions it adopts.

 

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is elected at a special Plenary Session of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine from the membership of the judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine for a single three-year term.

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine heads the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and organizes its activity.

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine has two Deputy Chairmen of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

 

Deputy Chairmen exercise under instruction of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine certain of his/her responsibilities.

Deputy Chairmen of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine are elected upon the proposal of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine for a single three-year term.

 

In the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, collegia of judges are established to consider the issues concerning initiating proceedings in cases arising from constitutional petitions and constitutional appeals.

 

The organizational, scientific and expert, informational and reference as well as other facilities for the activity of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine are performed by the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine which is headed by the Head of Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

 

Regulations on the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, its structure and staff are approved by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

 

The printed organ of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is "The Bulletin of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine".

 Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk attended the Constitutional Court and the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Italy 21.07.2014
From 9 to 12 July 2014 judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine for International Relations Stanislav Shevchuk took part in a visit to the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Italy in the delegation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine. The purpose of the visit was to study the approaches, techniques and methods of the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Italy to ensure the stability and unity of judicial practice within the justice system and its role in the process of the Supreme Court of Cassation of the Republic of Italy. Special attention was paid to solving issues of jurisdictional conflicts and cooperation between different jurisdictions within national judicial system.
 Constitutionalists from Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland discussed urgent issues of the bodies of constitutional jurisdiction 17.07.2014
On July 14 - 15, 2014 delegations of the bodies of the constitutional jurisdiction headed by the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia Aldis Lavi??, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania Dainius ?alimas and President of the Constitutional Tribunal of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Rzepli?ski visited Ukraine. During the visit a series of official events took place, including talks of the European constitutionalists with the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin, meeting with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Romaniuk, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitalii Yarema, First Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Inna Yemelyanova.
 The Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine signed Memorandum on Co-operation 16.07.2014
On July 16, 2014 the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin and the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine, Ambassador Madina Jarbussynova signed the Memorandum on Co-operation between the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine, which defines the principles and directions of the project co-operation between the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine. The purpose of the Memorandum is to promote international standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and democratic development, strengthening of the institutional capacity of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and its Secretariat. The document provides for the development and implementation of joint projects, holding of joint activities, including meetings, seminars, round tables, conferences, training programs, educational campaigns and so on.
