ccu1THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF UKRAINE is the sole body of constitutional jurisdiction in Ukraine. The Law of Ukraine “On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine” adopted on October 16, 1996 sets forth that the task of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is to guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution of Ukraine as the Fundamental Law of the State throughout the territory of Ukraine.

The Court held its first session on October 22, 1996 and adopted its first decision on May 13, 1997.

The organisation, authority and arrangement of activities of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine are set forth by the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law “On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine” and the Rules of Procedure of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine consists of eighteen judges. President of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and Congress of Judges of Ukraine each appoint six judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine for a nine-year term.

The Court is headed by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine who is elected for a single three-year term from among judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

The organisational, scientific and expert, informational and reference support for the activity of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is performed by the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

The printed body of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is "The Bulletin of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine".

On May 2-9, 2015 upon the invitation of the Executive Director of the "Law & Economics Center" at George Mason University, Professor of Law Henry N. Butler, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on International Relations Stanislav Shevchuk took part in the judicial education program "Economics Institute for Judges", held in Washington DC, USA. The program was aimed at studying certain aspects of economic analysis when making judgments and application and interpretation of the norms of law.

On April 27, 2015 judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk, Chairman of the Standing Commission of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on International Relations, and Serghii Vdovichenko met with the representatives of the Council of Europe in the framework of realization of the provisions of the Council of Europe Project "Support to reform the judicial responsibility in Ukraine". The meeting was attended by Head of the Justice and Legal Cooperation Department of the Council of Europe, Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law Hanne Juncher and Project Manager "Support to reform the judicial responsibility in Ukraine" Andrii Kavakin.

On March 20, 2015 Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yu.Baulin held a meeting with the Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania, former Justice of the Constitutional Court (2002-2011), Doctor of Law, Professor Armanas Abramavicius and the Head of the EU Project "Support to justice sector reforms in Ukraine", Doctor of Law, Professor Virgilijus Valancius. On March 18, 2015 in the premises of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine a presentation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine was held. Upon the assignment of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin, the event was attended by Head of the Department of External Relations of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Оlga Kravchenko. The participants were representatives of Parliament, ministries and governmental departments, judiciary, civil society, ambassadors of the European states in Ukraine.

At the invitation of the EU Project "Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine" Head of the Budget Planning and Finance Division of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Larysa Kireieva took part in the seminar "Strategic and Budget Planning and Information Systems in Justice Sector" held on March 12-13 in the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. The seminar was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Ukraine Gia Getsadze, Team Leader of the EU Project "Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine" Virgilijus Valancius, leading experts from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Great Britain, Lithuania, France.
